Central Bank of Turkey named a new governor today

  • The new Central Bank governor named after discussions between The prime Minister Davutoğlu with the president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmuş announced on April 11 after a cabinet meeting led by Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu in Şanlıurfa on April 11, Murat Çetinkaya a deputy Central Bank governor has been chosen by The Turkish government, to be the Bank’s new governor.
  • on April 19 the current Governor Erdem Başçı was due to expire. “We have come to the final stage in naming the new Central Bank governor. Last week we discussed the issue with our prime minister and then our PM with our president [Erdoğan]. The new Central Bank governor will be named today or tomorrow and will be from the bank, Deputy Prime Minister Mehmet Şimşek said.
  • Born in 1976, Murat Çetinkaya took a joint degree at Istanbul’s Boğaziçi University, studying at both its Department of Political Science and International Relations in the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences and in the Sociology Department of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.
  • Mr. Çetinkaya completed his post-graduate course at the Institute for Graduate Studies in Social Sciences at Boğaziçi University and is still pursuing doctoral work at the same university in the fields of international finance, economics and politics.
  • He began his banking career at Albaraka Turk Bank and has held a range of posts in international banking and treasury departments
  • After joining HalkBank in 2003, Mr. Çetinkaya worked as head of the International Banking and Structured Finance Department and then as Deputy General Manager for International Banking and Investor Relations. In this period he also served as Board Member in various Halkbank subsidiaries including Halk Investment.
  • Prior to being appointed a Deputy Governor, from 2008 Mr. Çetinkaya worked as Deputy Director for Treasury, International Banking and Investment Banking at Kuveyt Turk. He has served as a Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey since June 29, 2012.
